Investment banking recruiting is extraordinarily unforgiving. Industry estimates suggest that only 2 percent of applicants are accepted into competitive programs. At the most selective firms, acceptance rates frequently fall below 1 percent. Goldman Sachs received more than 360,000 applications for approximately 2,600 internship positions in 2025. That means roughly 99.3 percent of applicants were rejected.
Students are competing against candidates from the strongest universities in the country. Many already have relevant internships. Others have spent years developing technical skills and building relationships with bankers. Even an excellent GPA provides no assurance that a student will receive an interview.
The timeline makes the process even more difficult. Some banks begin recruiting approximately 18 months before the internship starts.
